THE OCTAVIA HILL COMMUNITY ARCHIVE
The Octavia Hill Community Archive records the life and influence of Wisbech born Octavia Hill (1838-1912). Octavia Hill was a noted nineteenth century social reformer.
The archive is based on her birthplace house in Wisbech where her parents lived in the 1830s. Octavia's father was strongly influenced by the ideals of Robert Owen of New Lanark. Owenites were active in the area at this time, promoting social reform and co-operative living.
The archive charts the work of Octavia Hill and the following generations of her fellow-workers in their efforts to improve the appalling living conditions of poor people both in Camridgeshire and nationally, especially by providing decent homes and helpful systems of management. Octavia's principles remain influential in many areas of modern life.
