Upwood and the Raveleys
Upwood, Great Raveley and Little Raveley
are three distinct, mainly agricultural, Cambridgeshire villages; joined together as one parish since medieval times. Their shared parish church is St Peter’s in Upwood.
Location:
The villages lie approximately six miles north of Huntingdon and two miles south west of Ramsey; they straggle the Ramsey Road and are separated from each other by farmland.
History:
All three villages were mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. The Upwood church mentioned, assumed to have been a wooden structure, was replaced by a stone building in 1100. Parts of this Norman building can be seen in the current church. In c.969 the estate of Upwood was gifted to Ramsey Abbey by Duke Ailwyn.
